Biography
Founded in 2016 by Oroma Cookey-Gam and Osione Itegboje, THIS IS US is a Nigerian brand grounded in storytelling, material consciousness, and a deep commitment to local production. Positioned as a unisex label, it exists at the intersection of workwear and creative expression—designed for individuals who move fluidly between disciplines, spaces, and identities.
The brand’s foundation lies in its relationship with Funtua cotton, a locally grown and processed material sourced from Katsina in northern Nigeria. From cultivation to weaving and dyeing, THIS IS US takes a hyperlocal approach, working within a tightly connected ecosystem that honours both craft and community. The fabric is hand-dyed in indigo at Kano’s historic Kofar Mata dye pits, embedding each piece with a sense of place, history, and continuity.
Aesthetically, THIS IS US leans into quiet functionality. Silhouettes are relaxed and purposeful, designed for everyday wear while retaining a distinct visual identity through texture, tone, and subtle detailing. Their signature patchwork pieces—often created from scrap fabrics—reflect an intuitive design language where imperfection becomes part of the narrative.
Sustainability is not treated as an afterthought but as an operating principle. Garments are repaired, re-dyed, or reworked rather than discarded, while packaging is designed for reuse. The brand also encourages a circular relationship with its customers, inviting them to return pieces for transformation or reintegration into new designs.
At its heart, THIS IS US is about redefining value—placing emphasis on process, people, and provenance over mass production.
In a world of excess, THIS IS US offers something quieter yet more enduring: clothing that carries memory, made with intention, and rooted firmly in the idea that what we create—and how we create it—matters.
