Biography
What began as a practical solution—a handmade diaper bag—has grown into FemiHandbags, the Nigerian accessories label founded by Femi Olayebi. Established in 2010, the brand produces leather handbags from its Ibadan atelier, where Olayebi, originally trained as a translator, built a business rooted in self-taught skill and close collaboration with local artisans.
Each piece is shaped through a hands-on process that spans cutting, skiving, and hand-finishing, with details such as whipstitched edges, rolled handles, and fringe emerging as quiet signatures. Classic silhouettes are often reworked through material and surface, incorporating aso-oke—handwoven by Yoruba artisans—alongside richly treated leathers. Colour plays a deliberate role, lending clarity and presence without excess.
Olayebi’s practice extends beyond the product itself, encompassing training and industry development within Nigeria’s leather sector. In 2018, she was named Best Handbag Designer of the Year by Fashions Finest Africa.
